How to use Hole19 with your Apple Watch and make the most out of your Premium subscription?

Before starting:
- Make sure that your Apple Watch is running at least WatchOS 4. Note that we no longer provide active support for Apple Watch 1st Generation.
- Make sure that your devices have a solid Bluetooth connection. Click here for help with the connection of your devices.
- On your iPhone, please update your Hole19 App to the latest version. To do this, go to the App Store, search for Hole19, and Update. When you update the app on your iPhone, it should automatically update in your Apple Watch as well.

 

How to start a round and use the Apple Watch?

To start a golf round, and to save it as well, you’ll always need your iPhone. If you have an Apple Watch Series 1 or 2, GPS distances on Apple Watch are based on the actual location of the iPhone to which it's paired. Make sure that both devices are within a 10-yard range to avoid pairing disruption. For Apple Watch Series 3 and above, it’s possible to use built-in GPS as explained in this article.

 

On your iPhone: 

  1. Launch the Hole19 app and choose the golf course where you want to play your round. Open the app and tap the blue ‘Start Round’ button. This will open the ‘Round Setup’ screen.
  2. Select the INPUT MODE as 'SCORING'. Please note that we don’t support Shot by Shot on the Apple WatchIf you only want distances on your watch, please take a look at this article.
  3. Tap on the circle with your profile picture to make sure that the 'Starting Tee', 'Handicap System', and your exact 'Handicap' are correct. Tap 'Save' when you’re ready.
  4. Do you want this round to be considered for handicap calculation? If so, please turn the toggle ON (ON = blue). For further information on the handicap simulator, see this article.
  5. On the 'SCORING MODE' field, select Stableford or Stroke Play.
  6. You can also add playing partners to your round by adding them through the circles right next to your profile picture. You’ll be able to add your partners’ scores on your Apple Watch as well.
  7. There you go, now you can tap on the blue ‘Start Round’ button at the bottom of the screen.

Before moving on to the Apple Watch:

After your round starts and the hole layout shows on your iPhone, please tap the bottom bar to make sure that all your Premium features are turned ON.

Make sure to toggle ON Auto-Change Hole if you would like the hole to advance automatically when you reach the next tee. Toggle ON Club Recommendation if you wish to have recommendations on your iPhone. Note that if you turn on the Differential Score, you’ll also see this information on your Apple Watch.

On your Apple Watch:

When you tap ‘Start Round on the iPhone, Hole19 will automatically open on your watch.

If you have an Apple Watch Series 3 or above:

It’s possible that the ‘Start a Round on your iPhone’ screen appears momentarily before changing to the ‘GPS source’ screen. This GPS screen will inform you what the source of your GPS is (iPhone or Watch), and how to change it. It’s easy! Long press the center of your Watch screen to open up the Menu > Tap Settings > Toggle ON the switch if you want to use Watch GPS or toggle it off if you wish to use the GPS from your iPhone. If you choose the iPhone GPS, bear in mind that you should keep the iPhone in your pocket during the round. 

 

 

SCORING AND STATISTICS

After choosing the GPS source, Hole19 will show you the screen with distances to the front, center, and back of the green. Simply swipe left to go to the scoring screen.

Tap + to add the total Strokes and then add how many of them were Putts, Sand Shots, and Penalties. Don’t forget to select the proper Fairway icon on each hole:

  • Arrow pointing downward - indicates you missed the fairway Short or Other (such as a bunker in the middle of the fairway);
  • Left arrow -  means you missed left;
  • Right arrow - means you missed right;
  • Circle - means 'Fairway Hit'.

CHANGING HOLES

  1. You can quickly change the hole by swiping up and down on the distances’ screen.
  2. After inputting scores and stats, you can swipe left again. This action will show you a new screen where you can see the differential score and a ‘NEXT HOLE’ button. Tap the button to move on to the next hole.

  3. In case you’ve activated the Auto-Change Hole on your iPhone, and as long as you have a solid Bluetooth connection between your devices, the hole will automatically change as soon as you reach the next Starting Tee. Note that this feature will only work properly if your iPhone is in your pocket.

 

ACTIVATING THE DISTANCE TRACKER

When on the distances' screen of your Apple Watch, long-press the center of your watch screen to locate the Tracker. Tap ‘Tracker’ to start. For a quick tutorial on how to use the Distance Tracker click here.

FINISH ROUND

On the last hole, swipe left to the ‘FINISH ROUND’ button on your Apple Watch. Tap on it to send your scores and stats to your iPhone. Tap OK on your watch to close the app. Please make sure that you have a solid connection between your devices, otherwise the scores won’t transfer to your iPhone. Finally, on your iPhone, compose your round post and tap ‘SAVE ROUND’.

NOTES:

If you have an Apple Watch Series 1 or 2!
The first screen you’ll see on your watch will be ‘Start a round on your iPhone’, simply wait a few seconds until the screen changes to ‘Distances’. Please note that as your watch is running an old OS, it will take longer to communicate with your iPhone.

Bear in mind that GPS distances on your watch will be based on the actual location of the iPhone to which it's paired. Make sure that both devices are within a 10-yard range to avoid pairing disruption.

Some considerations regarding Watch GPS and battery consumption!
Using the GPS from your Apple Watch heavily decreases the lifetime of your watch’s battery. From a full charge, you can expect an 18-hole round of golf to consume about 60% to 70% of the Apple Watch’s battery.

Closing (and not using) other Watch applications helps minimize battery consumption during your round. Click here for further tips on how to maximize battery life.

Wake Screen on Wrist Raise!
There has been a regression in the WatchOS 6 that causes apps to not appear when you "wake" the screen. You won’t experience this issue if you’re using the Watch GPS, but if you happen to choose iPhone GPS or you have a Series 1 or 2, you may want to check this article. 

Health information!
If you want Hole19 to show your Health Information such as Steps, Distance Walked, and Calories Burned, please click here and confirm that you've given all the necessary permissions. In order to keep track of your Health Information, you should use the iPhone in your pocket during the round.

If you've given all permissions and the Hole19 app still doesn’t track steps or other information, please head to your iPhone Settings > Privacy > Motion & Fitness and make sure that Fitness Tracking is turned on.​’
